strategy 12:
Hot Seat
What is it? They may assume a role from a character in a story, or someone from a biography, or act as an author for one of the books they are reading. Purpose? This is a role playing activity that builds children’s comprehension. they are deepening their understanding about the book they are reading. They explore characters, analyze story events, draw inferences and try out different interpretations. Implementation Children may wear a costume related to their character, or share objects and artifacts from the story that they have made or collected. Steps 1. Students prepare for the activity by reading a story or biography to learn more about the character they will be impersonating. 2. The student collects or designs his or her costume and any artifacts related to the story. 3. Children need to be prepared to make opening remarks. To do this, have the children think about the important things that they would like to share about the character and plan what they will say at the beginning of the activity. 4. The teacher is the facilitator, and the student is in the hot seat, introducing their character, and speaking in the first person about their character. 5. The classmates then ask questions to learn more about the character and offer advice, and the child remains in the role to respond to the students. 6. The student may also clarify any misunderstandings and add any big ideas that classmates have not mentioned. |
