strategy 11:
Shared Reading
What is it? It is a strategy to share authentic literacy with those who cannot read books independently. Purpose? The focus for the first reading is the student’s enjoyment. The subsequent readings are to draw children’s attention to concepts about print comprehension, and interesting words or sentences. Implementation: Teachers read the book aloud, modelling fluent reading, and then they repeat it several times over the next few days. Steps 1. Introduce the text. Teachers talk about the book, the author and illustrator, and build background knowledge by talking about the topic. 2. Read the text aloud. Teachers read the story aloud to children, tracking as they read. Children are invited to make predictions or joining in, if the reading is repetitive. 3. Have a grand conversation. Children talk about the story, ask questions, and share their responses. 4. Reread the story. Children take turns tracking the words while the teacher reads. If children are comfortable they can join in at predictable words. 5. Continue the process. Teachers continue to reread the story with children over several days. They encourage children who can read to read the text along with them. 6. Read independently. After children become familiar with the text, teachers distribute copies to read to read independently and use for other activities. |
