STRATEGY 9:
Reading Logs
What is it? Journals in which children write their reactions to books they’re reading or listening to the teacher read aloud. Purpose? Children can use these to clarify any misunderstandings, explore new ideas, and deepen their comprehension. Implementation Sometimes children choose topics for entries, and other times they respond to questions or prompts from the teacher. Steps 1. Prepare reading logs. Children make reading logs by stapling paper into booklets and writing the title of the book on the cover. 2. Write entries. Children write their reactions and reflections, make diagrams, and draw illustrations. Sometimes they choose their own topics, and at other times the teacher provides the topic. They can also take notes about characters or other story elements. 3. Share entries. Teachers monitor children’s work by reading and responding to their entries. They ask questions and write comments back to children. |
